I’ve always loved learning about space…and when I love something, I make crochet versions of it! A friend asked me to make a planet, and I was happy to oblige. In order to make it recognizable as a planet, rather than just a crochet ball, I added the rings that are iconic of Saturn. Plenty of other planets outside our solar system sport their own rings, though, so you can invent your own planet. It’s true that the smiling face isn’t exactly scientifically correct, but some things must be sacrificed in the name of cuteness!
Finished Size: 3″ (7.5 cm) tall, 3″ (7.5 cm) wide
Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 25 yards in planet color and 5 yards each in two contrasting colors for rings)
Crochet Hook G (4.00 mm)
10 mm plastic safety eyes
A foot of thin black yarn to embroider mouth
Rounds 1-5 measure approx 2” (5 cm). Gauge is not critical for this project as long as your stuffing doesn’t show through.

The ring has three stripes. Round 1 forms the middle stripe, Round 2 the outer stripe, and the slip stitch round the inner stripe. I used brown for Round 1 and a reddish-orange for the other two rounds.

Round 2: Join yarn to third loop of any hdc, ch 1, working in third loop of each hdc, (hdc in next 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) around, invisible join to first hdc: 60 hdc
Inner Edging: This round is worked in the unused chain loops from Round 1. Join yarn to any unused loop and sl st in each ch around. Invisible Join to first sl st, leaving a long tail for sewing: 48 sl st
