Here at Lyn’s Crafts we sell a lot of crochet thread. Our customers are super passionate about their projects and demand the best threads available. But, if you are new to the world of crochet, and in particular, crochet thread, you may not be aware of the different uses for this versatile fiber.

In this article we will describe some the different projects that are great for crochet thread and which threads are best used for each type of project.

Not sure of the difference between yarn and crochet thread, see our blog post Crochet Thread vs Yarn – what’s the difference?

The 10 best Projects for Crochet Thread:

Doilies and Coasters

Probably the number one use of crochet thread is making doilies and coasters. Since thread is finer than yarn it naturally lends itself to this type of project.

Doilies have very delicate features that are best rendered with a thinner fiber. Crochet Thread is perfect for this.

The most popular size for thread for doilies is size 10 but you can also use anything from size 3 to 20 to make a beautiful doily.

Table Runners

Table runners are also a good project for crochet thread since most feature many delicate stitches. When picking a thread for a table runner make sure you choose one that will drape well such as a cotton or linen thread.

Note that some blocking may be required to give your runner the best possible appearance. Here are some easy patterns for table runners.

Tatting

Tatting is handcrafting technique used to make decorative edging, as well as, doilies, collars and accessories such as earnings and necklaces. One of the key differences between crochet and tatting is that traditional tatting uses a tatting shuttle. Other techniques use a needle or cro-tatting, which combines needle tatting with crochet. For more information on tatting check out our blog post, What is Tatting and how is it used.

For tatting we recommend Lizbeth size 10 or 20.
